Professor Duarte Nuno Vieira is one of the world’s leading figures in forensic medicine, medical law, ethics, human rights, and personal injury assessment. He is Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and has served in major leadership roles across international forensic and medico-legal organizations, including the International Academy of Legal Medicine, the International Association of Forensic Sciences, and the European Council of Legal Medicine. With more than 350 scientific publications, over 800 invited keynote lectures outside Portugal, and extensive international missions for the United Nations, International Committee of the Red Cross, and other organizations, his work has had a profound global impact on forensic practice, human rights, and medico-legal standards.
Biography
Professor Duarte Nuno Vieira is Full Professor of Forensic Medicine, Forensic Sciences, Ethics and Medical Law at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Beira Interior. He is also Director of the Institute of Legal Medicine and of the Institute of Bioethics of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. His academic work brings together forensic medicine, medical law, bioethics, human rights, personal injury assessment, and the organization of forensic services.
Professor Vieira has held some of the most prominent leadership positions in the international forensic and medico-legal community. He has served as President of the International Academy of Legal Medicine, the International Association of Forensic Sciences, the European Council of Legal Medicine, the World Association of Police Medical Officers, the Mediterranean Academy of Forensic Sciences, and the Latin American Association of Medical Law. He has also served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and President of the Portuguese National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences.
He is currently President of the Portuguese National Academy of Medicine and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. He is a member of the International Forensic Advisory Board of the International Committee of the Red Cross and works regularly as a temporary forensic consultant for United Nations bodies, particularly UN OHCHR and UNODC. His international work includes more than 60 missions promoted by organizations such as the United Nations, International Committee of the Red Cross, European Commission, Amnesty International, and USAID, especially in the fields of human rights, torture investigation, detention monitoring, mass fatality investigation, and forensic system development.
Professor Vieira has published more than 350 scientific papers, edited or co-edited 13 books, and delivered more than 800 invited keynote lectures outside Portugal. He has supervised numerous doctoral and master’s theses and has contributed to academic and professional training in more than 30 countries, including training related to the Istanbul Protocol and the Minnesota Protocol.
His main fields of work and research include personal injury assessment, documentation of torture and ill-treatment, gender-based violence, forensic pathology, medical law, forensic ethics, expert testimony, and the organization of medico-legal systems. He has received many international distinctions, including the Douglas Lucas Medal Award of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the Clyde Snow Human Rights Award, the Milton Helpern Award in Forensic Pathology, and the IAFS Human Rights Award. His career represents a rare combination of academic leadership, forensic expertise, human rights work, and international medico-legal influence.
